FRENCH EMPIRE Circa 1810 This is the style of frame that Napoleon used to reframe the paintings in the Louvre when he was in power. Gold leaf over red bole; a double-coved profile with running compo palmette ornamentation in the outer cove; more detail along the sight edge. The deep outer edge of the frame is squared and painted in ochre. The diagonal splines that hold the miters together confirm a European origin.
